It’s heavy and cumbersome. Feels like I need a baby harness in front of my body.
BTW, this lens is a zoom, which can be closed to 70 mm. It also has image stabilization, so I’m sure the extra electronics add to the weight. Mostly, I’ll be using this lens rather than the one that came with the camera.

If you think the Rebel XTi is heavy, be glad you didn’t spend large on a metal bodied Canon. There are a number of aftermarket straps that you could buy to make your camera lugging experience better. The best advice is to go to a reputable camera store and check out the selection. I opted for a strap with a very wide and thick, shaped foam area around the neck. I find it very comfortable for me. Strap length is critical. The camera should rest below your sternum when you are standing. Too high or low and it will bounce around and be uncomfortable. Too high and it will bounce up and down on your chest. Too low and it will sway to and fro.
There are also some chest harness contraptions on the market that you might want to look at. (You can tell I don’t like these, can’t you?) But again, it’s what works for you, fits good and feels comfortable.
Another option is to get a small over the shoulder bag that holds the camera with the lens mounted on it. The downside to this is that you can’t be as spontaneous in your shooting. Often these bags can be worn around the waist as well for those who prefer this. If you are prone to lower back pain this wouldn’t work well for you.
are you trying to say that you are carrying a fix focal lens or is it a zoom telephoto? when carrying those i suggest you just get a dslr backpack, like from tamrac, which would let you carry your lens and camera and all your other goods stuff like how we use to carry our backpacks in highschool. and dont forget the tripod, coz unless that 300mm of yours have is, you better be sure that you dont move or shake your hand a bit while taking those longrange shots
but in broad daylight you should be fine.
