I own a Canon Rebel EOS Ti camera. i hear this camera has alot of capabilities but i don’t know what the capabilities are.
This weekend I have to go to a show to photograph a friend of mine who is performing on stage. I want to capture his expressions, and I also want to get some close-ups of his expressions. I want some really good shots.
I also don’t know whether I should buy a flash, does the camera have its own built-in flash, or what setting to put the camera on so that regardless of the lighting in the club, the pictures I take of my friend will come out great.
Also, does anyone know what types of lenses I can buy to attach to my camera so that I can get some nice close-up shots of my friend’s expressions while he’s on stage? Any help you can give would be so appreciated. I have to do a good job. Thanks.

Ummm. are you sure you own this camera? First, it is a Rebel XTi and some of your questions are quite obvious by looking at the camera. If you have never owned a camera before and this is your first, you are probably in over your head if you haven’t practiced with it.
First, READ THE OWNERS MANUAL!!!! That will tell you what the camera can do and what options it has.
Second, yes, it does have a built in flash … that is the thing that pops up on the top of the camera.
To be able to get close-ups you will probably want a 70-200mm lens. This allows for the most flexibility.
For lighting, you will have to know what kind of lighting the club has. Then, check the cameras menu for lighting and select the appropriate one. If it is going to be mostly dark, you will need a tripod to get clear images.
Mostly the quality of the pictures will depend on how experienced you are. You can have the best camera, but if you don’t know what you are doing the pictures may not come out so great.
I would read your manual (which will help you out) then PRACTICE a lot before you go. Find out what the specifics of your situation will be – how far from your subject you will be, action or no-action shots, lighting, etc. then practice so you will know what to do.
If you spend 5 minutes looking for the right settings on your camera for every shot, you will miss it all.
Good luck!
The Rebel’s built in flash isn’t really great… if it’s all you have to work with it’ll do but if you are serious about this type of photography and have the money it wouldn’t be a bad idea to upgrade to a better flash. I just bought a Canon Speedlite 430EX which is wonderful, it cost about $240. I believe there are other cheaper flashes with less options that would work fine for you as well.
I would assume the conditions you’ll be working in will be low light, so find a lens that goes down to 2.8 if you can… the wider your aperture, the better since you’ll need all the help you can get with lighting.
Testing your camera out in different lighting situations first is a very good idea. Don’t expect to just show up there and walk away with amazing shots your first time. The more prepared you are, the better. If there’s any way you can find out what the lighting will be like and how close you’ll be able to get to the stage, those would be good for you to know.
