My dad’s looking into a getting a rebel, digital, from someone but it doesn’t come with the lens so he’s hesitating buying it because he doesn’t want to purchase a lens for it, which will be more than the camera because the camera’s a really good deal…but I really want him to get it so I’ve been trying figure out if the lens from his old SLR, which isn’t digital, would go on it…it’s a 35-80mm lens.

Yes they are compatible. Both the film and digital versions use Canon EF lenses. With the digital version you need to account for the crop factor of 1.6. This means that you have to multiply the focal length by 1.6 in order to get how the lens will perform on a digital. So a 100mm lens will perform on the digital as a 160mm lens would on your film camera. This is good for telephoto lenses as it gives you more reach. On the wide angle end though you loose out. This is why the digital cameras kit lens is an 18-55mm instead of the 28-90mm lens that was the kit lens on the film versions.
One last thing. Canon makes lenses specifically designed for their crop sensor digital SLR’s. These lenses are called EFs. The 18-55mm kit lens is a EFs lens. These lenses can not be used on the film or full frame digital cameras. This isn’t really a big deal in that there is only one or two EFs lenses that you would ever need. The 18-55mm kit lens and the EFs 10-22mm wide angle lens. Of these two only the 10-22mm is really necessary as their are other better lenses that will cover the 18-55mm range. A great example would be the EF 17-40mm F4L. That said if you don’t have a better choice or the money to buy one the 18-55mm kit lens is cheap and will do the job nicely.
Check the lens type and look in the manual of the rebel to find out if they are compatible.
Yes, you should be able to. They both use the EF lens mount.
EDIT: Keep in mind that there will be a crop factor on the digital camera so his 35-80mm lens will effectively become a 56 – 128mm lens.
