I have the Canon Rebel XT camera and am usually OK at figuring out what setting to put it on. Though, I have troubles doing this when I am outdoors at nighttime or in a dark area like a club or a bar. When I go to take a picture on automatic, the camera flashes various times and will only take the photo after the 4th or 5th time I try. Anybody who uses the Canon Rebel and knows what setting to put it on in the dark ?

I have a Rebel XS 1000D What your seeing is the camera establishing focus in dark areas. Otherwise the camera has no reference to auto focus – it needs those flashes or all your pictures will be out of focus.
There is, however, a setting deep in your menus that will turn this
"pre-flash" off but it’s only available in any setting other than full auto.
And the pre-flash is only off when your out of full auto. If you return to full auto, the pre-flash is automatically turned back on.
I’m referring to the settings of shutter priority, aperture priority and so on.
Search your menus, search your manual, you’ll find it but I warn you again, if you try photos in dark areas your camera will not focus correctly in most cases.
