Yes, it uses the Canon NB-2L Li-ion rechargeable battery. I believe that the vertical release battery grip allows for use with 2 rechargeable batteries or with AA batteries.
they make lithium batteries that are rechargeable and made just for digital cameras.
It comes with a proprietary rechargeable battery pack. You can’t use normal AA or AAA rechargeable batteries unless they’ve got some sort of adapter out there, but I’m not aware of one.
Yes its a Li-ion. Its not AA. Canon does provide one when you buy the camera.

Yes, Lithium-Ion batteries and one battery and the charger is included. If you get an extra battery, I recommend getting a Canon branded one because many of the generics have very poor battery life on each charge.
