My friend was telling me today that she would like to sell me her Canon Rebel XTI that came out in late 2006 so I’m assuming she bought it in 2007? Anywho, I was wondering if anyone knows how long they are made to last for? I don’t want to give her a few hundred bucks then have it break in a couple months. I know my other friend has an XSI that’s still kickin’
Thanks ahead of time!

Probably longer than you will keep it.
Most dSLR cameras can last over 10 years, but most people buy a new one every five years or so due to the advancing of technology.
The 100,000 shutter cycles is how many times camera companies test them, not when they are expected to fail.
I have a colleague that has two Nikon D3′s. They are tested to 300,000 shutter cycles, but one of his failed at over 700,000 cycles and the other one has over 1,000,000 cycles on it and it is still working fine
If the camera is in good shape, just enjoy it
its not a matter of time as it is usage
I have heard from various users that the average life of a camera is about 100,000 shots- how long the mechanics will last. even after that you can just get the shutter replaced and go on for another 100k
If you don’t kill it by abouse probably quite a few years still. However, you just don’t know. The most vulnerable part in those cameras (just like any other DSLR) is the shutter. Replacing it costs $150-$250 which is about the same as what the camera is worth. Now on the dinky little entry level cameras from back then the shutters were often tested to 30000 actuations. That does not mean it will fail by 30001. What you typically see with cameras in this class is that a few die in the first few months. A few more around the 12000-150000 mark and the rest will happily surpass the 50000 shots.
Unfortunately canon, unlike nikon, does not store a reliable shutter actuation count anywhere so you’d have to ask your friend if she can guess how much she shot it.
After that compare her asking price with the going rate at ebay.
Good answers already on the shutter.
The battery also has a limited life of about 3 years, then trails off to about worthless by 5 years. Canon batteries are about $60, third party batteries are about $35.00.
