For a boat on the ocean or wildlife, you want to be in the 300mm or greater range. Check into the Canon 70-300 "IS" lens. It’s over $500, but it’s a decent lens for your purposes.

I too will recommend the 70-300 IS lens. Anything larger than that will cost you thousands.
depends on how much you’re willing to spend. just make sure it’s stabilized and consider how close you’ll be to your subjects. try looking at Sigma’s lenses, they have really nice tele-photo lenses for under 2000 (usually lenses by canon with the same features will be much more.) try this lens… http://www.sigmaphoto.com/lenses/lenses_all_details.asp?id=3340&navigator=3
pricey.. but with the wide aperture you don’t have to worry about flash as much as a f4.5 or 5
In my experience it’s best to go with a Canon lens and not a cheaper off brand. If you don’t shoot in low light situations a lens with a max aperture of 4.5 will do. If you are shooting low light you will want the largest aperture you can get but the price will go up dramatically.
