When I mean focus dots I mean the red dots you see when you look into the viewfinder. And If I can focus it using the thumb button rather than half click than click on the shooter finger.I know the canon 30d’s can do this and I was wondering if a rebel xt can and how can you set it that way.Hopefully this isnt confusing.

i have the xti and i can set the dots manually in the menu before shooting. i dont’ think there is a way to do it with the thumb.
If you have your owners manual, the instructions are on page 73. Because you have to press so many buttons that I don’t know how to describe without a picture, I am unable to write everything out for you. Let me know if you don’t have the owners manual. I might be able to email a copy of it to you.
Do you mean setting the focus points manuelly? At the top right of your camera, the far right button press that. Hit ok to have one red dot in your view finder. Then you the arrow keys to set where you want the focus point.
I would say yes
