I am so torn. Which one would you recommend? I am interested in pursuing photography semi-professionally and need help deciding which camera would work better.

All of the major brands are good. Choose a brand that appeals to you. Then you have to think about getting a spare battery, what size memory card, if you want an extended warranty, how much you can afford, what size zoom, if you want manual controls, the size of the camera, finding a reliable place to purchase it, and the list goes on and on and on…….
The first thing to realize is that almost any digital camera will take good pictures. If more people would read the manual more than once, they would be able to take better pictures. Usually, the person assumes it is the camera when it could be them not knowing exactly what to do. Just give yourself more photographic knowledge by doing more reading on the internet.
I really believe buying a camera is an individual choice.
The person needs to read alot of reviews on cameras so they can decide on the features that they really want and need.
Go to the store and hold them so you can see if they feel comfortable in your hands. If possible, take some pictures in the store to check the quality of the pictures.
I can only give a suggestion of what to look for in a new digital camera.
Good Luck

While limited to 6.1 MP capture, the Nikon’s sensor and processing produce excellent image quality throughout its ISO range, and Nikon remains the leader in noise control. Still, the Rebel beats the Nikon on resolution, Auto Focus speed and sensitivity, burst rate (3.5 frames per second), and LCD size. The Reb also has live view; the Nikon does not.
I have a Canon Rebel and my best friend has a Nikon D40, theres really not much diffrence between the photo quality. I don’t think thats going to help much… i say just get which ever one you can find for cheaper.
I Can tell you this i was going to do the same thing but money became short lol…But a friend of mine that makes a living taking photos of Rock bands and other things Told me to get a Nikon D40 he loves nikon….
Canon Hands Down Canon.
I own a Canon Rebel and they are once again HANDS DOWN super.
If it help go to Flickr and you can see the pics and the camera that made those pics…
nikon d40
They will both produce equally good or equally dismal pictures. Go to the store and handle both cameras. One or the other will probably feel better in your hand. (For me, it was Nikon) The one that feels best and more comfortable is the one you should get. Both brands are supported by a wide platform of accessories and gizmos. Both have many models and room to grow as far as you wish. Enjoy!
Get Nikon D40 and save money for good lens.
You can take professional looking photos on a mobile phone with a built in camera. A camera is only a tool, it is up to the operator to get the best out of it.
It depends on your needs, really.
Canon Rebels are similar to point&shoots because they can be used effortlessly without setting any manual settings and still takes nice pictures. This is good if you aren’t interested in adjusting too many settings, but you still have the option of adjusting them manually, if you want to.
Nikon D40 is more for adjusting manually. One setback of Nikon is that many of the compatible Nikon lenses do not have AutoFocus, and this may be a problem if you need AutoFocus (which most do, for taking a clear picture).
I personally would go for the Canon. But many prefer the Nikon for the manual capabilities, which may produce a more sound image. Really though, its the person behind the camera and the glass that counts.
Although really, if you become professional, you might want to switch over to Canon. They’re really killin it in the professional dslr game.
*EDIT
If you meant Rebel Xsi, definetely go with the Canon.
If your gonna blow up pictures then get the Rebel, it has a higher megapixel than the Nikon.
I have tried both cameras and there is not much difference between the two. In my opinion i would focus more on the lenses that you would get and an external flash unit.
My setup is a Nikon D80 with 18-55mm VR lens, 70-300mm VR lens and a SB-600 flash unit.
