I am looking for a Canon lens that fits on my rebel XSI. I take portrait pics and nature and also random shots. What kind of lenses fit on that type of camera? Also a lens made for those type of photos?

Back in the days of 35mm film cameras a focal length of between 85mm to 105mm was considered the ideal focal length for portraits. Since your XSi has a "crop factor" of 1.6, a 50mm f1.4 lens would be a good choice. (50mm on your camera is equivalent to an 80mm lens on a 35mm film camera).
Although the 60mm f2.8 macro suggested elsewhere is an excellent lens, its a full 2 stops slower than the 50mm f1.4 and that makes it much less suitable for available light indoor photography.
Additionally, the 60mm macro is an EF-S mount which means it cannot be used on Canon’s full-frame DSLR cameras like the 5D Mark II or 1Ds Mark III should you ever decide to upgrade to full-frame. The 50mm f1,4 is the EF mount so its compatible with any Canon EF mount camera from the older 35mm ones to the current full-frame DSLRs.
Any of the EF or EF-S lenses would fit on your camera.
For portrait lenses, the 60mm f/2.8 macro lens would be a good choice.

Great thing about Canon EOS camera are that you have great choice of lenses unlike Nikon and other brands.
I also have XSi and I have Canon and Tamron lens and they are all compatible.
Any Canon EF or EF-S lens will fit you XSi. If you have EF lens from your old Canon film camer that will fit your XSi or any EOS DSLR.
If you prefer to buy a cheaper Tamron or Sigma, make sure that they are FE or EF-S mount.
Note that EF lens are forward compatible but EF-S are not backward compatible.

Any of the Canon EF-S and EF lenses will work on your camera, as well as off brands supporting the EF or EF-S mounts.
My favorite lenses for portraits are the Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L and the Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L.. I also use a Canon 100mm f/2 for portraits.
Depending upon your budget a nice choice would be the Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5 IS USM, it compares farvorably to the "L" series of lenses, producing crisp and clean shot swith good contrast and color. It is a good street camera as well.. I’ve used it for landscapes, portraits, street shots, studio shots.. can’t say enough good things about this lens.
Try this.

let’s I’m gonna make it short, basically many lenses from macro, wide angle to super zoom. could be third party lenses, like Tamron or Sigma
all of them need to be either EF or EF-S lenses that made for Canon mount. then they will fit to your Rebel XSI.
for you, base on what you said. the lens 17-50mm f/2.8 is perfect for you, like random shots, indoor or outdoor, and even at night. it has wide angle to a 50mm zoom. 50mm zoom in your XIS would be like 85mm, because your camera is not full frame.
also you might wanna get a Canon 50mm f/1.8 it cost only $100, which is very very inexpensive for this lens, because it can take awesome portrait! why so inexpensive? because it made of plastic, of course the lenses are glass. this lens feels cheap, feels like a toy… but it makes awesome photos.
EF? EF-S?
