Anyone who comes right out and says one is better than the other is probably completely biased. I shoot Nikon. I have for 5 years now. I would tell you either the Nikon or the Canon is capable of taking great photos and decent video. There are trade offs with either camera. You can see them both at DPReview. Go out a hold one of each. Put it up to your eye and feel out where the controls are. Some people feel Nikon’s are laid out better and some fell like Canon’s are. You wont go wrong with either camera. Take your time making a decision. Once you’ve made it, stop reading reviews. Go buy your camera and start learning to use it.
Both cameras can take professional quality images with the right person behind it.
What you need to decide after looking at all the lenses and features of the other equipment made by Nikon and Canon, which system you want to marry … once you choose a Nikon or Canon DSLR, that is the system you will be using for decades. It is just far too expensive to switch cameras systems once you have a camera and a couple of lenses.
Take your time and do your research knowing that both camera systems are excellent.
This review does some comparison http://www.cameralabs.com/reviews/Nikon_D5000/ The Canon T1i has an advantage in features over the D5000 being able to autofocus more lenses. The 15 MP sensor of the Canon might capture a tiny bit more detail with the right lenses, but the kit lens isn’t the one to provide that detail. The 12 MP sensor of the Nikon seems to do better than the 15 MP Canon at high ISO.
The Nikon D5000 is most definetly better. It takes supreme quality shots and is used by profsionals. I am not sure if it has video because i know the d60 does not. Nikons are always the better choice.
Ok,I have the same dilemma, after some time spending on comparing and testing this cameras read my conclusion:T1 better on video then D5000,D5000 faster and more details in pictures than T1,d5000 has a better lens in the pack,T1 more mp but smaller sensor,T1 fells more quality in your hand(made in japan vs made in thailand nikon, personal opinion)T1 couple mm smaller and lighter than D5000,D5000 has a more practical display but T 1 has a fixed one with more dots and etc etc, this maybe will never end.I choose D90 for fast respons build quality, feel, function, pack lens, bat life and pict quality and some more. Go to a shop and test first to see what is best for you.T1 and D5000 are 2 good cameras(nikon is less expensive now)
The best one is the one that feels best in your hands. Spec wise they are virtually the same. Both have large collections of lenses and accessories and both brands are used by pros. It really is a personal decision. Go to a store and try them out.

Both, neither.
It is YOU who takes the better picture or video.

I would go with Canon on this one.
