This is a gift I would like to get for myself once the holidays are over. I currently have a decent digital SLR but i want to upgrade. How can I tell which one is better if I can not even tell the differences between the two. Thanks for your help.

The 40D, if you can still get one, has a better construction quality, more tactile interface (second control dial) far better viewfinder, much faster drive rate and better AF system (more cross points)
It doesn’t have video though. If video isn’t a deal-breaker then the 50D is probably the better option for now. If a 40D were readily available to you at a good price then I would actually go for that over a 50D.
Isn’t the 40D discontinued?
What are you upgrading from (hopefully from another Canon so you can continue using the lenses you have).
Why not get another lens?
get the 40d. i own a canon rebel t1i. wish had gotten the 50d..the HD movie recording
Which is best depends on how you plan to use the camera. I can say from experience the 40D is a much faster and better built camera. While it retains the "easy" modes of the Rebels, the addition of a second command dial and multi-controller for the autofocus system make it a much better camera for someone who knows how to use a DSLR. That said, the T1i does offer slightly higher resolution (handy for larger prints) and can record video which neither the 40D nor the 50D can do.
I’ve had the 40D for just over two years and saw no reason to get the 50D or T1i. The 40D and 50D are practically identical with the exception of the imaging sensor and upgraded LCD panel of the 50D. Interestingly enough, I’ve found the images from my 40D to be cleaner and sharper at high ISO than those of the 50D or T1i. In fact, I was very close to jumping to Nikon until the new 7D was introduced. The improved autofocus, build quality and speed made the 7D a worthwhile upgrade from the 40D.
Essentially, the 40D is a better camera, but if you want HD video recording, then you will need to go for the T1i. The following buyer’s guides compare the features of all the Rebel and Semi-pro cameras.
