The Cannon Rebel xti is a great camera to start with for learning photography. It is fairly simple to use and extremely flexible. Makes awesome photographs and is a great value.
BUT do not take it to the beach (or another DSLR for that matter). The interchangeable lens will allow sand inside and muck up the works.
I would look into a good but cheap point and shot to take on vacation. Especially to the beach. Look for a model in the 6-8MP range and with a lens that does not extend or retract in focusing, zooming, or powering on or off. (Sand has a way of finding its way in between the lens barrel pieces.
A water proof model is the absolute best! Then you can expand your horizons and shoot from just about anywhere. If water can’t get inside, then neither can sand!
It’s one of the smaller more practical Canons. It’d be good for your class and possibly for everyday use, but I’m not sure taking it to the beach is a good idea.. I’m sure taking anything of Value to the beach.
I recommend you take a smaller, cheaper camera to the beach. One that you wouldn’t mind getting sand all over.
Absolutely not, I recommend getting something like a Kodak EasyShare or something, they generally start around $120 and they’re good point and shoot cameras.
The Canon Rebel XTI is a great beginner camera but I would not recommend taking it to the beach, that’s for sure, unless you have 100% insurance on the camera that covers any sort of damage done to the camera.
Definitely check out the Kodaks.
Leave the DSLR at home unless its a Pentax K10D or K20D which is very well-sealed against dust and moisture. Just read the review of the K10D at shutterbug.com.
If you’re committed to the Canon, then check the Olympus Stylus SW series of cameras which are water proof and shock proof. And leave the Canon at home.
The Canon Rebel XTi is fine for everyday use. I use mine all the time, and it will be great for your photography class.
Be sure to take a camera bag with you when you go to the beach, and keep the camera in there when you aren’t using it. I wouldn’t be too concerned about getting sand inside the camera, unless you plan on changing your lens a lot… but even if you do, just be careful.
