David asks…

Is Kodak and Canon cameras better than Samsung because they have been making cameras longer?

My 10 yo daughter has been shopping for her first digital camera. She likes the features on one made by Samsung and it is within her price range. We were told by a sales person that Kodak or Canon cameras are better because they have been making them longer. Is the technology really that different due to length of time manufacturing a product? Does Samsung make decent digital cameras for a beginner? Sorry for several questions, but they all relate to my main question. Thanks for helping us make a decision!!!

For a beginner
I suggest the samsung s85 or s630

How common is Error 99 on Canon cameras?

I’ve been researching some cameras some and have messed about with some, and I’ve found that I really like Canon. But then I came across the “dreaded Err99″. I’m sure all cameras will have their errors (as with any technology), but the Internet makes this seem like a frequent problem in Canon models. How common really is this error, and should it deter me from purchasing Canon?

rob answers:

It is much more common than it should be.

Dirty contacts on the lens or camera seem to be the problem (communications between the lens and the camera) but can be caused by other things including temperatures (low) or event issues when using generic lenses especially right after the cameras firmware has been upgraded.

Donald asks…

Which is better canon cameras or nikon cameras and why and whiat are there best models ?

I dont know what to buy from professional cameras so help me and tell me which one to buy Canon or Nikon and why and what are there best models ?

rob answers:

Neither is “better”.

You will no doubt get the idiots saying “buy Canon” or “buy Nikon” because they are the best.

These people are talking bollocks.

The best camera is the one which has the facilities YOU need/want and which is within YOUR budget.

All their models are good from bottom of range to top – it again all depends on what YOUR requirements are.

How do you use Picture Style Editor for Canon cameras?

How do you use Picture Style Editor for Canon cameras?
I bought a Canon Rebel T2i and with it came Picture Style Editor. I have no idea how to use it. Whenever I go to File>>Open Image, nothing shows up. When I try to drop and drag pictures from My Pictures, nothing happens.
I went to http://web.canon.jp/imaging/picturestyle… but it doesn’t show how to open images.

rob answers:

I don’t use this software even though I own Canon cameras. I would say the first step is to “import” a photo into the software then you should be able to open and edit that photo.

Any Canon cameras with optical zoom in movie mode?

I really want a Canon, preferably at a low cost (less than $400 or $300)
but most importantly I want to be able to have optical zoom in movie mode.
I’ve done my research and most of their cameras don’t have this feature.
I really don’t care about the noise that comes from the zooming,
I just want to zoom, lol.
