What is the suitable lense for wild animal photography with canon 1000D (rebel Xs)?

rob answers:
The Canon EF 75-300 is a notoriously bad lens.. It’s slow to focus and it has some bad barrel distortion. It is one of the few Canon lenses I would stay away from.
Depending upon your budget I’d consider ..
1- Canon EF 400mm f/2.8L IS USM
2 – Canon EF 100-400mm f/4L IS USM
3 – Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM with 2x converter
4 – Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM ( a very affordable lens, crisp and clean with 2 levels of IS )

Charles asks…
Memory card for a Canon Rebel XS (EOS 1000d)?
I’m getting a Canon Rebel XS, also known as a 1000d, and i was wondering if it came with a memory card, or if I would need to purchase my own.
Also, if I do have to purchase my own, what size/type should I get? Can you maybe possibly roughly translate for me the amount of space on the card into how many pictures I’d be able to hold?
I’m a bit clueless, obviously.

rob answers:
Here’ s the manual, read it:

It says the SD card is sold separately. You can use either an SD or SDHC card. I would recommend a 4-8GB SDHC card. That is about the best/cheapest price point at this moment.
At about 3.8MB for the best quality shot setting, you will get over 1000 pictures on a 4GB card or 2000 on an 8GB card. Picture file size is highly dependent on what you shoot. A clear blue sky takes very little file space, but a heavily forrested scene takes up more. If you shot in RAW format, you would use nearly 10MB per shot. Don’t worry about RAW unless you really intend to do high quality image manipulation in Photoshop.

William asks…
Is there any way of taking panoramic photos on the Canon eos 1000d/ Rebel XS?
I have a tripod, but what setting do I use?

rob answers:
You will need a tripod, as was already stated. The photos must be all in the same horizontal plane and have the same vertical alignment. They should overlap by a good bit, so that the middle of one photo is the edge of the next in the panorama. Then you just need a bit of software to stitch them together. Due to natural distortion, the photo must be altered before the pieces will fit together properly. Try this site:

*10.2-megapixel DX-format imaging sensor for prints up to 20 x 30 inches
*Includes 3x 18-55mm Zoom-Nikkor VR Image Stabilization lens

Lizzie asks…
Should I get the Nikon D40x or the Canon Rebel XS (1000D)?

rob answers:
I recommend you go on flickr.com and look at pictures people took with Rebels and D40s. That’s what I did when I was choosing between a Rebel of a D series. Then go into a store and take a look at the cameras. You may like one menu, etc. Over the other. I also tried my friend’s D40, and then my other friend’s XTi. I preferred the pictures with the Rebel. I ended up buying the Rebel XSi and I’ve been using it for almost two years. I’m very happy with the pictures. I ended up buying mine from B & H Photo. They are WONDERFUL, and have great prices. Great people to work with and have a smooth operation going. They’re also US-based (New York). Good luck!
