Nancy asks…

I want to buy a dSLR camera. What do you think of the Canon Digital Rebel XTi?

I have $600 dollars.
I ended up getting a Nikon D40, recommended by the guy at Wolf Camera. Any new camera is a HUGE set up from the digital camera I had previously… especially an SLR. I am charging my new camera‘s battery now, and will take some pictures around the neighborhood as soon as it’s done. I am sure I will be impressed with the quality.

rob answers:

The Rebel XTi is an awsome camera and you will not go wrong purchasing it. The Nikon D40 and D40x are also great cameras as well.

I would not recommend the Sony or any other DSLR with image stabilization built into the body of the camera. Instead I would go with the lens based solutions offered by Canon and Nikon that cost a bit more but provides much stabilization (as much as 1 stop) at longer focal lengths.

With the Canon or Nikon, you cannot go wrong.

Good Luck.

Laura asks…

nikon d50 or a canon digital rebel xti?

I have had a nikon d50 for a awhile now, my ex bought it for me so I am thinking about selling it for something else, it seems EVERYONE has a canon so I look at what canon was around the same price as my camera and it said a canon xti digital rebel. Is this a good camera? should i sell it and buy that one?

rob answers:

Everyone drives a Ford Explorer too, but that doesn’t make it a Porsche Cayenne :) It all depends on where you look too. Both of my neighbors have Nikons. One big factor in the low end Canon rage is WalMart. They sell both online, but whenever I go into Wal-Mart they prominently display the Canons, and the Nikons are nowhere to be found. Don’t be deceived by Wal-Marketing.

If you plan to step up later, I recommend the Nikon. If this is your last stop for a good while, you might want to look at the Canon.

I like the low end Canons, but prefer the high end Nikons. That’s just me. Both companies make good cameras across the board.

Canon Digital Rebel Xti SLR Camera?

Is this a good price?

Also, will my lense from my Canon Rebel 35mm EOS G fit it?

rob answers:

There is something VERY wrong with this company … The price is far to low to be a complete US supported Canon.
For example the camera comes with a battery and charger, but this company charges you for them … At much higher prices than you can buy them in a proper camera store.

Example: External Canon Battery AC/DC Rapid Charger $149 vs. $39 for an extra, actual Canon charger (the Lithium-Ion NB-2LH rechargeable battery is supplied with charger when you buy the camera from a reputable store like B&H Photo or Adorama)

This is what you should expect to pay for the camera http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/457530-REG/Canon_1239B002_EOS_Digital_Rebel_XTi.html

Of course your existing lenses will work on the XTi … That was the whole reason that Canon dumped the old “breach mount” cameras and developed the EOS camera’s. Basically any EOS lens will work on any EOS camera body (there are some digital only EOS lenses, but you are going from 35mm to digital so you will not be effected by the difference … )

Sharon asks…

Is the SunPak Pro622 flash unit compatible with the Canon digital Rebel XTI SLR camera?

rob answers:

Honestly all flash heads would work.

Your real problem would be

1. The connections – if they are hot shoes or plugs etc.
2. You cant use the 3D matrix metering
3. You can’t use +/- flash compensation

You can use A and Manual

Right after the shot you can decide on how the image looks and adjust from there. To be on the safe side establish your “standard” so that you would be guessing all the time.

Back to basic photography. Guide no. And distance

Betty asks…

Is the Canon Digital Rebel Xti the best SLR camera to buy?

Also if I buy it, which lens would be best to use for shooting closeups at baseball and other sporting events? Would this lens be a seperate purchase?

rob answers:

It’s not the best but it’s a great entry level dSLR. It might be the best dSLR under $1000 if that is what you meant.

You can get a body only from Amazon.com for around $699. Canon sells a bunch of telephoto lenses which would be good for sports. It would depend on your budget.

I use the 28-135mm IS lens as my walkaround lens. Great piece of glass.

The 18-5mm kit lens isn’t the best quality but it does give you a wide angle for not much $.

You have a tons of lenses to choose from. Check out Canon’s line (and EF 101) and if you have questions on a particular lens, post a new message.
